Roi
Green, the CCNY women's varsity fencing coach, whose career at City College
spanned three decades, passed away on June 12 2006 at the age of 79.
Green was well respected by the entire CCNY community and equally beloved
by his peers and pupils. Taking over as the head coach in 1979, Green, who
received a master's degree in education from CCNY in 1982 after earning a
bachelors degree in social science from Fordham University at Lincoln Center
in 1978, transformed the fencing team into a competitive and well trained
program.
A native New Yorker, Green was passionate and committed to the sport, having
been an alumnus of the George Santelli School of Fencing, at which he honed
his skills from 1954-1958. In 1956, Green was a candidate as a first alternate
on the United States Olympic Fencing Team.
His legacy will be one of an enduring mentor, coach, teacher, counselor and
father figure to the multitude of young men and women he touched over the
course of his fulfilling life.
BRONX FENCER
SCORES IN
RIVERBANK TOURNAMENT (2006)
Showing
his dexterity with a foil, Paul J. Williams has captured first place in
the Riverbank State Park fencing competition held on Father's Day 2006 at
Riverbank Fencers Open Co-ed foil tournament sponsored by the Swordline
Fencer's Club. Williams defeated 15 opponents in eight bouts against other
fencing clubs around the city. He was presenting the Alexandre Dumas Fencing
Society (ADFS). The win was cause for celebration on a number of fronts,
according to Williams. "It was kind of like a Father's day gift for
my dad and a birthday present for coach Clement", Williams added, noting
that the coach's birthday was Father's Day. For Williams, the victory presented
his second tournament win in recent months. Williams won a United States
Fencing Association contest -one week prior to the close of the Metropolis
Fencing Club in Manhattan. According to Clement, a representative of the
New York Empire State Games and a longtime fencing master in Harlem and
on the Upper West Side, the win marks steady progress for Williams, who
he says "is a contender for a higher level of competition." (from

RIVERBANK STATE PARK FENCING PROGRAM
The
Riverside
State Park Youth and Adult fencing program was brought to life by
Roi Green and St. Clair Clement
and started in 2004 with club-tournaments between the 'Roi Green Riverbank
Fencers' and the fencers of ADFS. Prior to finding a home at Riverbank, the
program was part of the first New York city-wide off-season open fencing program
for all city high school fencers and coaches. In the spirit of bringing fencing
to inner-city neighborhoods and in memory of Roi, the coaches of the Alexandre
Dumas Fencing Academy are helping to expand fencing for children and adults
at this location, including after-school fencing training. They are providing
formal support for all fencing at the site with the training and performance
of advance and recreational tournaments and exhibitions. Classes for the new
season have just started, and are to be held each Saturday from 2:30pm to
4:30pm for beginning adults, and 4:40pm to 6:30pm for advanced fencers (adults).
The youth program is held every Tuesday afternoon.
